An Ordinary Muslim, starring Purva Bedi, now playing at New York Theatre Workshop
Purva Bedi stars as Saima in the new NYTW play, An Ordinary Muslim. Written by Hammaad Chaudry and directed by Jo Bonney, the play balances, "...the high expectations of the previous generation, the doctrines of their Muslim community, and the demands of secular Western culture, Azeem Bhatti and his wife Saima struggle to straddle the gap between their Pakistani heritage and their British upbringing." - New York Theatre Workshop
"...Saima (Purva Bedi) wants to resolve her version of the same conflict more overtly and in public. Up for a promotion herself, she feels confident enough to start wearing the hijab at work, as she has recently started wearing it at home. When she is met with the inevitable blowback from bigots, Azeem tells her it’s her fault for dressing 'like an Algerian asylum seeker.'" - New York Times
The play, as part of the 2017/18 Season, opened on February 7th, and runs until March 25th.
