About Sylvia Kates
Sylvia was born and raised in Charlottesville Virginia. She received her BA in English from the University of Virginia and her MFA in Acting from Brown University/Trinity Rep. While at Brown she played Nina in Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike on Trinity Rep’s main stage and appeared in the premiere of Charise Castro Smith’s The Hunchback of Seville at Brown/Trinity’s Playwright’s Rep.
Now living in New York, Sylvia is a founding member of The Light Fantastic, a Brooklyn based theater company that brings minimalist theater productions to non-traditional audiences in prisons, homeless shelters and low income senior centers. In December of 2015 the company toured The Glass Menagerie to non-traditional audiences all around the boroughs of New York. Sylvia played Laura and it was the most joyful experience she has ever had as a performer. The Light Fantastic recently toured its second production, A View From The Bridge, around New York City with Sylvia playing the role of Catherine. Sylvia earned critical acclaim in Fall 2018 playing the role of Amber in Theatre J's production of Anna Ziegler's play Actually.
